This paper examines the population health impact of the roll out of free ARVs in South Africa between 2006 and 2016. We link all fives waves of the nationally representative NIDS panel data to the facility-level District Health Information System on ARV provision to estimate the mortality reduction from ARVs. We find that amongst the high prevalence subgroup of Black Africans between 25 and 49, access to ARVs led to a large and significant reduction in non-injury mortality and significant improvement in the self-assessed health.
