Adam Booij has been awarded the Van der Schroeffprijs 2015

TI fellow Adam Booij has been awarded the Van der Schroeffprijs 2015 for best Economics and Business Lecturer at the New Year’s assembly of the faculty of  Economics and Business at the University of Amsterdam on January 14.

This year’s jury members were Han van Dissel (dean), Anne Keegan, TI fellow Massimo Giuliodori, Peter van Baalen and Samantha van den Hoek (FSR). They combined submitted nominations with the results of course evaluations to select three excellent candidates for the award. The jury report contained the following comments:

Adam deserves this award for his exceptional efforts to improve education for economics students in subject of econometrics. Students learn to master this extremely complex material thanks to Adam’s clear lecture notes, excellent teaching skills and his unbridled enthusiasm. He was successful in making the master’s course in Applied Econometrics much more interesting and attractive for students. He also made the course correspond better to the current state of literature in this subject. His final lecture is always met with a standing ovation. The changes that Adam initiated have ensured that the pass rate for has increased dramatically and we have also observed that they have a noticeably better command of the material in subsequent courses.

The purpose of the Van der Schroeff award is to stimulate the quality of teaching at Economics and Business. The award is named after Prof H.J. van der Schroeff as a tribute to his exceptional lectures on a wide range of economics and business subjects. He was known for his very personal style of teaching that can best be described as a successful combination of acting and teaching. An annual highlight was his rhyming ‘Sinterklaas’ lecture, enjoyed by generations of students between 1945 and 1970.
